Why Replace Missing Teeth With Dental Implants?

It's essential to replace a missing tooth, not only for appearances, but because tooth loss can lead to multiple oral problems that may adversely affect your health. Some of the oral consequences of missing teeth are bone loss, shifting and drifting of the teeth around your missing tooth, alteration of your bite, jaw joint problems, difficulty or pain chewing properly and uneven stress on the remaining teeth in your mouth. Simply put, your mouth is designed to work at its best when you have all your teeth. Replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant restores your mouth to its original design and supports the other remaining teeth for maximal oral function.

Why Replace Bridges With Dental Implants?

Dental implants are also a tremendous substitute for bridges, and even dentures. Traditional bridgework allows for the remaining teeth around missing tooth or teeth to be held in place. Though bridges act as a support to the teeth around a missing tooth, they do not strengthen the bone within the gums because bridges are not implanted into the bone. As a result, the bone where the missing tooth or teeth would have been, may grow weak with osteoporosis. If the bone loss underneath the missing tooth continues it pulls away the gum, which also effects the gum around the surrounding teeth causing infection. Furthermore, bone loss can cause facial disfigurement and a look of premature aging if not reinforced with a dental implant. In other cases, the gap between the missing teeth and remaining teeth may experience bacteria leakage, causing decay around the remaining teeth and leading to future need for fillings and root canals. Though bridgework may be a good short term substitute for missing teeth, it is not ideal for the longevity of your oral health because of bone loss and the pressure put on bridges, which can open up a gap between the tooth and the bridge and expose the remaining teeth to harmful bacteria. The elegant longterm solution is a dental implant or implants that reinforces the bone as well as the remaining teeth. In short, dental implants replace bridges because they are better suited for overall longterm oral health.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental Implants effectively replace the entire structure of a missing tooth with three main components:

When a tooth is lost, it's roots are also lost, so a dental implant acts as the replacement roots. The dental implant is a perfectly fitted titanium rod that is embedded into the bone within your gum, where your missing tooth once lived. The dental implant fuses with your bone, securing it and anchoring your new tooth. On top of the dental implant is placed an abutment, which is a technical word for the secure platform on which your new tooth will sit. At Boulder Canyon Dental, the new tooth you'll receive is a dental crown called a CEREC crown. After your dental implant has healed, the CEREC crown is connected to the abutment to complete the dental implant procedure. Dr. Jon Smith DDS applies custom staining to your new CEREC crown, so that it looks exactly like your natural teeth.

How Long Does A Dental Implant Take?

There are three stages to a dental implant, and each stage requires a different amount of time:

Stage 1: Dental Implant

Many people are surprised to learn that their tooth or teeth can be replaced with dental implants on the same day. Each dental implant takes about an hour-and-a-half, and having your tooth extracted and replaced with a dental implant on the same day improves your healing time. At Boulder Canyon Dental, your dental implant placement is nurtured by an advanced healing methodology that Dr. Jon Smith DDS applies during your procedure. Using your body's own plasma rich proteins, Dr. Smith applies stem cells from your own blood during the dental implant process, which enhances your tissues healing process. Many patients report only mild pain and return to their regular workday without skipping a beat. Remember, this first stage only involves placing the dental implant where your missing tooth was/is extracted. Once the dental implant is placed there are approximately 3-4 months of healing per patient, where the bone tissue begins to fuse with your new dental implant. There are some exceptions to the healing time involved because every patient is different. With that said, Dr. Smith uses advanced technology to give you a very good idea of the healing time your specific case will require, thus saving you unnecessary additional visits to the dentist's office.

Stage 2: Dental Abutment

Your dental abutment is the foundation or secure platform on which your new tooth will sit. The dental abutment placement process takes about an hour per tooth, and Dr. Smith again uses plasma rich proteins from your own body to enhance your healing process. Following your dental abutment placement, your gums require healing and the time length is 4-6 weeks, depending on each patient's particular case. When you come back next, your CEREC crown will be placed on the abutment, and the dental implant process will be complete!

Stage 3: CEREC Crown

Placing your CEREC Crown is the last stage of the dental implant. Following the placement and healing of the dental implant and dental abutment, it's time to seat your dental crown, which is your new tooth. Dr. Smith uses advanced CEREC technology to form and fit your dental crown, as well as custom staining and placement of your new tooth. With the efficiency of CEREC crown technology, each dental crown takes one to two hours to place. Once your CEREC crown is in place, the three stages of your dental implant are complete! Take care of your dental implant in much the same way you should take care of your teeth, making sure to floss and brush daily, avoid smoking, and limit very hard or sticky foods.
